Want to Try Your First Escape Room? Here’s What to Look For

If you’re completely new to the world of escape rooms, you’re probably wondering what to expect… but that’s something which isn’t really all that easy to explain. 

While every escape room will present you with the same mission - to escape - each room is different. And by different, we mean different styles of puzzles, different themes, different difficulty ratings, different room sizes, and more. As an escape room newbie, the choices can seem overwhelming and it can be difficult to know which room you should choose as a taster. So, what should you be looking for in your first escape room?

Here are a few things to take into consideration:

Puzzle Styles

There are lots of different puzzle styles that you can find in an escape room. Some require you to use your physical strength, others challenge you to use your initiative or imagination, and some mean you’ll need to get creative in order to find the clues.

Difficulty Level

Our Recommendation: Start in the middle. For all you know, you could be an escape room pro, which means going in at a beginner level may make your first experience too simple. On the other hand, you could struggle under the intense pressure of a high difficulty room. Try a mid-level difficulty and adjust for your next experience.

Room Size

Depending on where you go, you can find escape rooms that accommodate every size group, right through from two up to massive parties. Used for both date night fun and corporate team building exercises, there are room sizes to suit all requirements.

Our Recommendation: For your first experience, think small. Gather together a group of just two or three friends, enabling you to get to grips with the situation without becoming lost in a crowd of people. You’ll be able to have a finger in every pie, working together on each puzzle rather than seeing groups branch off to tackle riddles.

Room Theme

There’s an almost never ending list of escape room themes, and it’s possible to find anything and everything. Themes are usually based around mystery or danger, with zombie apocalypses, medical rooms, crime scenes, and science labs very common.

Our Recommendation: It’s simple… just choose something you love. Select a room based on a theme that you enjoy; something that’s going to hold your interest and motivate you to succeed. There’s really no right or wrong here, and no matter what you choose, you’re sure to have an experience that’s going to spark a passion for escape!
